Me sorprendi y me dio mucho gusto ver mucha gente nueva que esta llegando a este sector.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;La mayoria son compañias nuevas, lo cual es genial, pero tener un volumen tan alto de compañias nuevas puede traer problemas cuando deseas atraer proyectos medianos o grandes. La carencia primordial es la falta de personal con experiencia, tambien la falta de hardware y software es un factor importante y eso puede limitarte al tratar de responder ante las necesidades de un cliente potencial. Un tema importante dentro de la junta fue atraer este tipo de proyectos medianos y grandes, no estoy seguro que con el grado de madurez del sector local sea la mejor estrategia.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Antes se debe pasar por un analisis sensato de las capacidades de cada compañia, no podemos vender lo que no sabemos. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hablando con Margarita Solis, Directora del &lt;a href="http://www.ijalti.org.mx"&gt;IJALTI&lt;/a&gt;, le propuse desarrollar una vision de más alto nivel, para promocionar el sector, mediante un plan ejecutivo que se lleve acabo por un organismo &lt;span style="font-weight:bold;"&gt;COMPLETAMENTE INDEPENDIENTE Y DESVINCULADO&lt;/span&gt; de las compañías, evitando asi favoritismos y parcialidades.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Una vez que tengamos este analisis podremos decidir que nicho atacar, ya que estamos a varios años de retraso con los paises que forman parte de la cadena productiva del CGI y Multimedia, es por eso que no hay tiempo de capacitar a un ejercito de animadores y esperar traer coproducciones en los proximos 6 meses. Hay que ser muy sensatos en que podemos hacer, pues ha habido ya varios ilusionistas que ofrecen lo que no se puede hacer o lo que no tienen el volumen de personas para realizarlo y hasta han salido en algunos medios presumiendo proyectos cerrados y hasta el dia de hoy no hay nada. De igual forma hemos sabido de empresas que han logrado ir generando un cumulo de participaciones en peliculas, documentales y en la publicidad, que de igual forma han sabido manejar sus clientes. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Una ves entendiendo que podemos hacer, hay que desarrollar ese canal de ventas, tener a la o las personas adecuadas en los lugares adecuados ofreciendo los servicios que somos capaces de respaldar al 100%. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Si no logarmos encontrar a estas personas es necesario que los organizmos como Ijalti funcionen atrayendo proyectos, permeandolos hacia las compañias que no cuenten con canales de venta adecuados y posteriormente a aquellas que tengan mejores capacidades de promocion y posicionamiento.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Finalmente las compañias deberan ser responsables de la "tropicalizacion" de sus empleados, es decir capacitarlos en los servicios especificos que desarrollan y sus flujos de trabajo ya que resulta irreal pensar que una vez que egresan de una universidad o institucion son personas que puedes incorporar inmediatamente a tu proceso productivo.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Si se logra ensamblar este flujo de trabajo podremos atacar algunos nichos de necesidad que existen en el mercado internacional, pero no hay que esperar 5 producciones de largometrajes en este año, pues simplemente vamos a quedar mal... la prudencia y los hechos deben de demostrar que sabemos y podemos hacer, no el discurso de venta, es preferible tener un excelente reel con clientes satisfechos a tener un vendedor "bocon" con una tonelada de problemas y demandas... ;)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;-----&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;On thursday I was invited to a meeting in wich the organizer wanted to gather all the people who are in the local CGI and Multimedia industry. I was very happy to see that there is a lot more companies and people are getting involved.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Many of them are new companies, wich is great, but beign young companies bring a lot of problems when you face a medium or big project. Some times you don't have enough people, hardware or software licences to fulfill the needs of the client. A big theme in the discussion that day was to attract bigger projects. I honestly don't know if that's the best thing to do. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I think first there must be an analisys of the real capabilities of each company. If you don't know what you have is very difficult to know what to offer...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Then you should look for a specific niche that lacks of certain services, if you can find a match you have a great oportunity to make business.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Once you decide where to focus your efforts, you MUST get a sales agent, executive producer or partner who can be ON SITE, handling all the sales.  In our experience you have to find &lt;span style="font-weight:bold;"&gt;THE GUY&lt;/span&gt;. If you can't get one, they you should be that person (if you have the character for that). Remember that the easiest way to kill a company (economical and creatively) is by not having projects.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you can get all of this elements, you have a winning scheme, its not easy. There are always people looking for unexperienced people, so be carefull when you define the terms of the relationship. Remember that not all that shines is gold, we've had some very bad experiences with people and companies so keep the eyes open but dont "buy" everything. Try to know all the people who is in your industry, they can help you, but also you have to be aware of what are they doing so you dont get left behind by them and kick you out of the market. Set very clear expectations on what you want to achieve, once you have that medium to long term view set, is easier to plan and complete tasks. La pregunta es: ¿Cuales son las oportunidades de un estudio en esta situacion? Muchos de ustedes quizas ya conozcan que &lt;a href="http://prolost.blogspot.com/2009/02/ten-years-of-orphanage.html"&gt;THE ORPHANAGE cerro&lt;/a&gt; por cuestiones economicas, dejando un increible equipo "flotando" en la industria, supongo que muchos de ellos ya deben de estar contratados en diferentes empresas, pero cuantos de ellos tendran la intencion de crear nuevas compañias. En el &lt;a href="http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=59&amp;t=726679"&gt;post de CGtalk&lt;/a&gt; a cerca de esto, alguien comento que muchas de las compañias de CGI se encuentran constantemente al borde de la quiebra y que este bache economico esta acelerando el proceso. ¿Cuanto de esto es cierto? nunca lo sabremos, dudo mucho que alguien salga diciendo: Estamos casi quebrados!!! pero puedes dejar tu proyecto en nuestras manos.&lt;br /&gt;Hay personas que creen firmemente que la crisis trae oporunidades. Me encuentro dentro de ese grupo. Aunque no soy un experto, ya llevo dos anhos mas o menos en esto y pues he adquirido por lo menos algunas manhas que creo que sirven para sacar adelante esto de sistemas huesos, controladores, etc etc.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Para aquellos pocos que les interese y/o guste esto (y creanme, son muy pocos...) el rigging en mi definicion se trata de: la relacion(es) de diferentes elementos para controlar un objeto o serie de objetos. Actualmente usamos 3dsmax pero queremos pasar la animacion (y por lo tanto el rigging) a XSI, asi que los tutoriales o ejemplos que pueda postear aqui podrian ser en alguno o en otro software...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Rigging es el proceso inmediato anterior a la animacion y es tan importante como la animacion misma. Un animador puede ser excelente pero si el rig es malo o limitado, el resultado sera de poca calidad... Un rigger a mi parecer esta en un punto extranho entre lo tecnico y lo artistico, porque no solo hay que saber de expresiones y  de scripting sino tambien debe saber de animacion y de haber animado para conocer las necesidades del mismo animador.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Como ultimo comentario, un rigger necesita saber de muchos conceptos: la diferencia entre un pareting y un constraint y cuando utilizar uno o el otro; la diferencia entre un world space y un local space y sus posibles efectos en un esqueleto; los reactor controllers con sus maldiciones y bendiciones; conocer el gimbal locking y como minimizarlo; axis orders; que es IK y que es FK, quaternions vs eulers...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mi proximo post sera de un sencillo tutorial de como riggear un brazo mecanico en max&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;saludos&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;--------&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hey people&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I believe i mentioned in my introductory post that here at exodo I'm in charge of the rigging and character setup area. Saludos&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;-----&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We are VERY exited because we were invited thanks to our partners in Mexico City to the first edition of &lt;a href="http://f5fest.com/"&gt;F5 festival&lt;/a&gt; in NY that is organized by &lt;a href="http://motionographer.com/"&gt;Motionographer&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The shortfilm directed by Luis Torres and Tania Nunes is 100% experimental, its animated with stopmotion, 2d and 3d, using specially filmed material. We´re about to finish the production, tomorrow we'll have the audio sesion.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The film required the work from the whole team in both cities, many 3d pieces were modeled, rigged and textured, they were tracked and composed over liveaction and stopmotion footage and we made some dynamic simulations for a scene.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;After the festival the videos will be on the site, be prepared for an interesting concept both visual and as a story. Impresionante pelicula que creo que logro un increible avance en el arte del stop motion. Es increible ver como los movimientos se ven tan fluidos al grado que dejas de sentir el stop motion...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Al final de ver la pelicula vi los behind the scenes en donde hablan de diferentes cosas: talento de voces, animadores, etc etc&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Lo que me impresiono mas fueron los esqueletos que se usaron para animar a los personajes, los cuales fueron creados por &lt;a href="http://www.mackinnonandsaunders.com/"&gt;mackinnon &amp;amp; saunders&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;No se uso el face replacement (cambiar las caras o partes de la cara de los personajes para simular el efecto de habla o cambio de expresiones) sino que utilizaron sistemas de mini engranajes. Este sistema permitio animar las expresiones de una forma gradual eliminando el caracteristico "pop" del stop motion.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;La ropa que se uso tambien fue real, hay algunas escenas que estaba seguro habian sido echas en 3D... pero no. Se usaron distintos tipos de rigs para simular sobre todo en Corpse Bride el hecho que le vestido simulaba flotar o ser movido por el viento. Es increible como el R&amp;amp;D logro hacer que algo tan complejo como el velo de novia se vieran TAN bien y TAN fluido!!!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Al final me di cuenta que fueron estudios ingleses quienes se encargaron de generar los esqueletos, los munhecos etc etc... porque no fueron estudios de EU? mi humilde opinion es que creo que porque los europeos generan mas este arte que los norteamericanos. ILM usaba stop motion en sus principios, pero dejo todo eso a un lado por un "mas eficiente 3D".  Lo que me hace suponer que hay estudio mas especializados en europa con tal vez costos mas bajos.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Al final es irrelevante donde lo hicieron o no lo hicieron simplemente creo que es una pelicula de blockbuster que tecnicamente rompio el molde de stop motion llevandola a una nuevo limite.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Saludos&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;-----&lt;br /&gt;Hi there people!!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;On Sunday I watched again Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride. Amazing Movie, I think is a huge achievement in the stop motion craft. Its incredible to see that kind of smooth movement, you even forget that you’re watching a stopmotion movie.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Finished the movie I went through the behind the scenes where they tell about voice cast, animators, etc.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What I found the most impressive are the rigs they used for character animation, they all were crafted by mackinnon &amp; saunders.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;They didn´t used face replacement for simulating the expressions and phonems, instead, they used a miniature system with very small sprockets. That way they were able to animate the expresións gradually avoiding the classic stop motion “pop”.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The clothes were real, some scenes I was sure they were CGI… but no. They used specialized rigs to simulate them, mostly on the wedding dress when it was moved by the wind. Was amazing how R&amp;D managed to achieve that fluid movement.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At the end I realized that the studios who developed all the rigs were located in UK.  Why they were not developed in US?.  In my opinion I think is because the stop motion is more widely used in Europe than in USA. ILM used to rely on stop motion, but they threw it all overboard for a more “efficient” 3D pipeline. El stopmotion siempre me ha dejado esa imagen del animador hermitaño, pasando horas y horas y horas en su set, revisando sus notas de produccion y hojas de timing. Aun la animacion 2d tradicional tiene sus trucos para eficientar y ahorrar recursos, no se diga en tecnicas 100% digitales. En cambio el stopmotion parece una serie de ritos que se repiten entre cada disparo de la camara.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Gran parte del impacto de la animacion stopmotion es este factor sorpresa de poder realizar animaciones practicamente con cualquier cosa. Recuerdo el corto de Jan Pinkava y Rene Castillo que realizaron con una bicicleta o aquella pieza de&lt;a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uuGaqLT-gO4"&gt;&lt;span style="text-decoration: underline;"&gt; Blu titulada MUTO&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt; que se vuelve un concepto hibrido entre el stopmotion y el 2d.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ese factor sorpresa se vuelve gran parte del exito de una produccion sin importar la tecnica que se use. Trata de recordar 3 comerciales de TV y todos ellos estan ahi entre tus neuronas gracias a algo que llamo tu atencion y que no esperabas en el flujo logico del mismo.  Es una excelente escuela el stopmotion para encontrar esa vuelta de tuerca que impacta...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;-----&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A few days ago someone sent me this &lt;a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_HXUhShhmY"&gt;youtube link &lt;/a&gt;and once the video was finished I was wearing a big smile on my face, mainly because of the simple but elegant concept, but also I felt a little sad about the models, photographer, director and producers involved. Stopmotion has always put in my mind that image of a pariah locked down in his set reviewing his production notes and x sheets again and again and again. Even 2d animation has many tricks to get a faster workflow, not to mention 100% digital productions. I remember a shortfilm made by Jan Pinkava and Rene Castillo in which they used a single bike o this &lt;a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uuGaqLT-gO4"&gt;Blu&lt;/a&gt; video which is a hybrid technique between 2d and stopmotion.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That wow factor is part of every succesfull production, no matter what technique was used. Try to remember 3 tv spots and they are between your neurons because of that wow that catched your eyes. Comprando libros para programas de 3d que corren en DOS, escarbando tutoriales de Max y Maya en Netscape y Windows NT, ver como el Sumatra paso a convertirse en XSI y que ahora se vuelve una maravilla con el ICE... Despues comenzar a dar los pasos importantes, buscar empleo en empresas de postproduccion y animacion, armar una base de contactos y colegas, desarrollar diferentes habilidades y defectos, para finalmente poder encontrar un equipo de personas con las mismas aspiraciones y compromisos hacia la actividad que desarrollamos y comenzar a atraer esos proyectos interesantes y retadores que van mas alla de los limites nacionales. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Verdana;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Verdana;"&gt;Hoy puedo resumirlo en un parrafo, pero esto comprende desde 1997 hasta 2009. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Verdana;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Verdana;"&gt;La historia no es la materia del blog. Aqui estan invitadas las personas que con las que tengo la suerte de trabajar y deseo que junto con ellos, ustedes y nosotros podamos plasmar lo que va sucediendo dentro y alrededor de la empresa, hablaremos de los proyectos (hasta donde los NDAs lo permitan), el entorno, daremos opiniones, consejos, ayuda y espero respuesta a preguntas que surjan.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;...  Veamos que sale de todo esto.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;----------&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A blog seems a good idea, but it can get lonely when your posts are spaced by 5 years, ha!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A little history might come handy, I've been involved in 3d and vfx for a while, both as a hobby and as a career, not being an expert, I've lived very closely many of the different stages a person must go through to be part of this industry.
